The gear

About this gear

The Zoom H4essential is a handheld recorder that writes 32-bit float WAV at 44.1, 48 or 96 kHz through dual A/D converters, so there is no gain to set and loud sources do not clip. It records four tracks at once: the built-in 90° X/Y stereo microphones plus two locking XLR/TRS combo inputs with +48 V phantom power, and a 3.5 mm mic/line input takes a lavalier or camera feed. Recordings go to a microSD card of up to 1TB, and over USB-C it doubles as a 4-in/2-out audio interface. It runs for about 9 hours on two AA alkaline batteries, or from USB-C power, and spoken menu guidance makes it usable without looking at the screen.

On productions it captures a backup of the desk mix, ambience, interviews and room sound, independent of the main recording chain.

FAQ

Questions about this gear

The recorder takes microSD cards from 4GB to 1TB. Ask us when you book and we will add one; otherwise bring your own.

Yes. The XLR/TRS combo inputs take mic level on XLR and line level up to +24 dBu on TRS, so a desk output goes straight in. Thanks to 32-bit float you do not need to set the input gain.

Zoom quotes about 9 hours on alkaline AA batteries recording two tracks from the built-in mics, less with four tracks and headphones. For long days, power it over USB-C from a power bank or charger.

Yes. Over USB-C it works as an audio interface on Mac, Windows, iOS and Android, with 4-in/2-out or stereo modes.
