The gear

About this gear

The SSK SD500 is a pocket-sized 250GB solid-state drive with a USB-C port running at USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10 Gbps). SSK rates it at up to 1050 MB/s read and 1000 MB/s write, and the aluminium shell sits in a rubber bumper with a tether loop. In our own testing reads held at roughly 700 to 800 MB/s, while sustained writes fell to about 50 MB/s once around 85 GB had been written in one pass.

At esports events, drives like this can serve as portable Windows To Go boot disks, one per player, so each competitor brings their own system and settings to any tournament PC. It is equally handy for moving project files, proxies and graphics packages between machines on site. For long continuous recordings, choose a drive with consistent sustained write speed.

FAQ

Questions about this gear

A USB-C port running USB 3.2 Gen 2 at 10 Gbps. It also works on older USB 3.0 or USB-A ports with the USB-A cable, at that port's lower speed.

It is better suited to transfers, proxies and boot use. In our tests writes held around 430 MB/s for the first ~85 GB and then dropped to about 50 MB/s, which is too slow for long high-bitrate recordings.

Yes. Format it exFAT to read and write on both; NTFS is read-only on macOS without extra software.

Yes. Set up as a Windows To Go drive (for example with Rufus, NTFS) it runs a full Windows install over USB, provided the PC's firmware allows booting from USB.
